Cursor and Claude Code operate differently from prototype builders. They work inside an existing development environment, with access to the full codebase and the ability to propose and apply multi-file changes. This gives them genuine utility for experienced developers — and creates a specific set of failure modes when the AI's context window is insufficient for the full complexity of the project.
Context window exhaustion in large codebases
Both Cursor and Claude Code have context windows — limits on how much code they can hold in working memory at once. In codebases above a certain size and complexity, the AI begins making changes without coherent knowledge of how distant parts of the codebase interact. It resolves the TypeScript error you asked about, and breaks the utility function in a file it did not include in its context. The result is a net negative — more issues introduced than resolved in each session.
Agentic mode and unintended side effects
Both tools offer agentic modes in which the AI can execute a sequence of actions autonomously — running commands, modifying files, installing packages, and making API calls. Without careful scope constraints, agentic sessions can modify files outside the intended scope, introduce new dependencies without review, or execute operations against external services. The failure mode is typically discovered after the session, not during it.

They are less reliable as security reviewers because security review requires a holistic view of the application that the context window frequently cannot accommodate. Applications built with heavy AI assistance in these tools often have correct individual components and insecure compositions — authentication logic that works in isolation but can be bypassed when combined with the routing configuration, for example.
Architecture drift in iteratively AI-modified codebases
A codebase that has been through many rounds of AI-suggested modifications without a human architect reviewing the overall structure tends to drift. Abstractions that made sense early in the project accumulate workarounds. New features are implemented in inconsistent patterns. The result is a codebase that functions but is increasingly difficult to extend safely — and that the AI itself cannot reliably reason about because the implicit architectural decisions are not documented.
