How much does Claude cost in the UK? A sterling worked example, August 2026
As at 11 August 2026, Anthropic publishes every Claude price in US dollars, and no vendor publishes a sterling price list. Converted at HMRC's published exchange rate for August 2026, the headline figures for a UK buyer are: Claude Pro at roughly £14.96 a month (£12.72 a month billed annually), Claude Max at roughly £74.81 or £149.62 a month depending on tier, and Claude Team standard seats at roughly £14.96 a seat a month billed annually. API work is priced per million tokens: roughly £3.74 in and £18.70 out on Claude Opus 5. Every figure on this page excludes tax, and the basis for all of them is stated below, because a sterling Claude figure is only as good as the exchange assumption behind it.
The exchange rate basis, stated before the numbers
All conversions on this page use HMRC's published monthly exchange rate for August 2026: USD 1.3367 to GBP 1, published on 22 July 2026 and applying for the calendar month. HMRC publishes these rates for calculating customs value, and they are the natural basis for a UK business worked example because they are official, dated, and fixed for a known period. As a sanity check, the Bank of England's daily spot rate on 10 August 2026 was 1.3521, about 1.1 per cent stronger for sterling; the two will always differ slightly because the HMRC rate is struck in advance. What lands on a card statement will differ again, because your card issuer applies its own rate and may add a non-sterling transaction fee. None of that changes the budgeting picture by more than a few per cent, which is why the honest approach is to state the basis and round to the penny rather than pretend precision the rate cannot carry.

Three footnotes matter more than the table. First, the Max plan is a monthly subscription only: Anthropic's Help Center states this plainly, and although the comparison table on the pricing page currently shows an annual option for Max, the Help Center and the pricing page's own FAQ agree that annual billing exists for Pro and Team, so we treat the Help Center as controlling. Second, Team has a floor of 2 seats and a ceiling of 150, and standard and premium seats can be mixed within one workspace. Third, Enterprise pricing is now published rather than purely sales-quoted: $20 a seat a month billed annually, plus all usage billed at standard API rates. Self-serve Enterprise requires at least 20 seats, is USD-only, and usage credits are bought up front; sales-assisted Enterprise starts at 50 seats, supports multi-currency billing at negotiated rates, and bills usage monthly in arrears. That sales-assisted route is the one place a UK business can end up with a genuine sterling invoice, at a rate agreed in the contract rather than published anywhere.
Three worked examples, with the working
A 10-person SME on Team standard, billed annually. Ten seats at $20 a seat a month is $200 a month, or $2,400 a year. At 1.3367 that is £1,795 a year, or £14.96 a seat a month, excluding tax. The same firm billed monthly pays $3,000 a year, roughly £2,244: the annual commitment saves about £449 a year at this size.
A 12-person firm with two heavy users. Ten standard seats plus two premium seats, billed annually, is (10 x $20) + (2 x $100) = $400 a month, or $4,800 a year. At 1.3367 that is £3,591 a year, a blended £24.94 a seat a month across the twelve. The premium seats carry a substantially higher usage allowance per session, which is usually the right shape for a firm where two people run long document or coding sessions daily and everyone else uses Claude a few times a day.
An API workload. Assume an internal document assistant that processes 40 million input tokens and produces 8 million output tokens a month on Claude Opus 5, with no caching and no batching. Input: 40 x $5 = $200. Output: 8 x $25 = $200. Total $400 a month, which is £299.24 at 1.3367. Run overnight through the Batch API at half price, the same workload costs about £149.62. On Claude Sonnet 5 at the standard rates that apply from 1 September 2026 ($3 and $15), it costs (40 x $3) + (8 x $15) = $240, roughly £179.55. The assumptions are doing the work in that paragraph, which is the point: an API budget is a token forecast multiplied by a price list, and both halves should be written down.

The modifiers are where real bills are won and lost. Batch processing halves both input and output prices in exchange for asynchronous turnaround. Prompt caching reads cost a tenth of the input price, with cache writes at 1.25 times (five-minute) or 2 times (one-hour) the input rate. Routing inference to US-only capacity costs a 1.1 times multiplier on all token categories on Claude 4.6 and later, which is worth knowing in reverse: region-constrained routing carries a premium, and if your data residency requirements push you to a partner cloud rather than the first-party API, the economics change again. VAT and billing currency: what Anthropic actually says
Anthropic's pricing page carries the footnote that prices shown do not include applicable tax, and its billing documentation says your billing address determines how taxes are calculated. A tax or VAT ID can be entered at signup or afterwards in billing settings. For consumer plans the Help Center says pricing is available in your local currency where supported, and that some regions include applicable taxes in the displayed price while others add tax at checkout; no list of supported currencies is published. What Anthropic's documentation does not state anywhere is the specific UK treatment, so this page does not assert one. The defensible position for a UK budget is: use the ex-tax dollar price, convert at a stated rate, and if UK VAT at 20 per cent applies to your purchase, a Team standard seat billed annually comes out at roughly £17.95 a month including VAT rather than £14.96. A VAT-registered business should confirm the actual treatment, including any reverse charge accounting, with its accountant, because the answer affects cash flow rather than just the headline.
Why no vendor gives you this answer
Anthropic publishes dollars. AWS Bedrock's pricing page for Claude is in dollars. Google Cloud's Vertex AI pricing page is in dollars, with one wrinkle: Google's SKU browser will display GBP unit prices for Claude models when your billing account is in sterling, but those figures are Google's own currency conversions, applied to Google's billing, and Google warns that conversion-driven changes arrive without notice. They are not an Anthropic sterling price list, and nobody should quote them as one. That absence is why this page exists: the conversion has to be done by someone, and it is more useful done once, dated, with the rate and the rounding stated, than done silently in a hundred spreadsheets with a rate nobody wrote down.
What changes in September, and one date this month
Two dates belong in any Claude budget written this month. On 31 August 2026, Claude Sonnet 5's introductory API pricing ends, and the standard $3 and $15 rates apply from 1 September; that is an introductory discount expiring rather than a price rise, and the fuller story, including the tokenizer change that quietly moves token counts as well, is in our July briefing on what Claude actually costs a UK business.
